Offertory

Élévation in F                                                     Edouard Batiste

Postlude

Sortie in F minor                                               Leon Boëllmann

The organ music today is by French composers who were contemporaries.

Theodore Dubois (1837-1924), Paris Conservatory director and organist at the Madeleine, composed his “little march” using the organ flute and string stops.

Edouard Batiste (1820-1876), Paris Conservatory professor and organist at St. Eustache, wrote much specific organ music for the Roman Catholic liturgy. An elevation takes place during the consecration during the Mass.

Léon Boëllmann (1862-1897), organist at St. Vincent de Paul in Paris, was a composer of orchestral music, as well as organ music. A “sortie” is designed as music as people are leaving the church.

The hymn at the procession, “Jerusalem the golden,” is from a Latin poem of 2,966 lines titled De Contemptu Mundi (On the Contemptibleness of the World) that was written around the year 1145 by the monk Bernard of Cluny (abbey in France). John Mason Neale, one of the first to translate Latin and Greek poetry of the early church, translated parts of this poem into English in 1851. (These hymns are located at #595-598 in The Hymnal 1940.)
