MUSIC NOTES

Prelude                                Veni Emmanuel                                Daniel Pinkham

Introit                   Drop down, he heavens, from above: and let the skies pour down  righteousness. Let the earth open: and bring forth salvation. The heavens declare the glory of God: and the firmament showeth His handywork.

Offertory             Be strong, fear not: behold your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompense;                He will come and save you.

Anthem –             Jesus Christ, the Apple Tree                            Simon Andrews

Postlude              Veni Emmanuel                                                  Daniel Pinkham

Veni Emmanuel, the processional hymn today, is based on the 7 Latin antiphons (known as the “Great O” for each beginning with that letter) that were said on successive days before and after the Magnificat at Vespers between December 17-23. The tune is a 15th century chant that was first used with the English translation (1861).

Daniel Pinkham (1923-2006) was a composer of symphonies, operas, choral works, film scores and numerous organ works. For forty years he was music director at King’s Chapel, Boston, and was on the faculty of the New England Conservatory of Music. His variations from 1996 use various organ colors.

The anthem is a setting of a poem first published in England in 1761 based on Song of Solomon 2:3, Luke 13:18-19 and Revelation 22:1-2. The music is set to the hymn tune “Tallis Canon” by Simon Andrews (b.1958), born in England and a music professor and conductor in Lancaster, PA.
