A Fuge or Voluntary William Selby
René Louis Becker (1882-1956) was born in Alsace. He lived in America most of his life as a teacher and organist in St. Louis and Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Detroit. This composition presents a reflective mood while meditating in a sacred space.
Joseph Guy Ropartz (1864-1955) was a French composer from Brittany whose music included five symphonies and various instrumental chamber music. This piece (excerpted from his Sortie) exhibits imitation of the ringing of bells as an accompaniment to the melody.
William Selby (1738-1798), born in England, is one of the first
organists and composers to emigrate to America, as early as 1773. After serving in churches in London, he was organist at Trinity Church in both Newport, Rhode Island and Boston. While he was organist at King’s Chapel in Boston, he organized one of the first concerts in America.
