MUSIC NOTES

Prelude

Voluntary in C        John Stanley

Adagio – Andante – Slow – Allegro

Offertory

Arioso        J. S. Bach

Postlude

Toccata in F Major    Dieterich Buxtehude

John Stanley (1713-1786), although blind from his second year, was first appointed to his first organist position at age 11 and graduated at age 16 with a Bachelor of Music from Oxford University. He became organist at the Temple Church in London in 1734 and was appointed Master of the King’s Band of Music in 1779. His voluntaries (instrumental music for church services) consist of several movements with contrasting tempos and organ registration (choice of stops).

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), organist and composer from central Germany, recycled and revised his pieces as needed for the occasion, sacred or secular. He arranged his “Arioso” as a movement in a church cantata and in one of his harpsichord concertos. The organ arrangement is by E. Power Biggs, the English-American organist.

Dieterich Buxtehude (1637-1707), born in Denmark, was organist at St. Mary’s Church in Lubeck in the north of Germany. His reputation as an organist and composer in the late 18th century that Bach traveled over 200 miles on foot to observe and hear Buxtehude’s music at his church. This toccata (“touch piece”) demonstrates the finger and foot dexterity and the contrasting divisions of the organ.

The second Communion hymn is a translation of the Latin hymn (written 1263) by St. Thomas Aquinas, an Italian Benedictine monk who is considered one of the great theologians of his time.
