Fugue in D J. S. Bach
Today is the third Sunday of a 17-day period of preparation for the season of Lent (that will begin on Ash Wednesday), a tradition that goes back to the late 6th century. The Alleluia and the Gloria in Excelsis are omitted until Maundy Thursday during Holy Week. The names that are given to each of these three Sundays are Latin words representing the number of days prior to Easter. The term for this Sunday is Quinquagesima (the Latin word for the number 50), 50 days before Easter.
Whitney Eugene Thayer (1838-1889) was one of America’s earliest concert organists and organ teachers. “The Contemplation” (subtitled Offertoire for Vox Humana), published in 1870, contrasts a soft reed with flutes.
Dieterich Buxtehude (1637-1707), North German organist and composer, composed this canzonetta (a short imitative piece) that uses groups of repeated notes.
René Louis Becker (1882-1956) was born in Alsace, a region between France and Germany. He lived in America most of his life as a teacher and organist in St. Louis and Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Detroit. This composition presents a reflective mood while meditating in a sacred space during the Eucharist.
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) composed many pieces for organ and harpsichord using a form known as a fugue (a piece based on a single theme (subject) that is imitated at various pitch levels against a 2nd theme (countersubject). This fugue is possibly an early work of Bach.
