MUSIC NOTES
Prelude
Prelude on “Bourgeois” Flor Peeters
Offertory Anthem
This is the Hour Richard Shephard
Postlude
Prelude on “Sine Nomine” Richard M. Peek
The Sermon Hymn text is a translation from a Latin poem by Adam of St. Victor (d.1192), a monk at the Abbey of St. Victor, near Paris. The tune Bourgeois was composed in 1551 by Louis Bourgeois, composer of the Doxology that we sing each Sunday. He was a Parisian who lived in Geneva as a follower of the reformer John Calvin. The organ setting, where the tune is placed between interludes, is by Flor Peeters (1903-1986), organist for St. Rombault’s Cathedral in Mechelen, Belgium and a director at the Royal Conservatory.
The anthem today is an example of a familiar hymn text being set to a
different tune. Its text, taken from #206 and verse 2 of #208 in The
Hymnal 1940, was originally written as part of a ten verse poem for
communion. The music was composed in 1997 by Richard Shephard (b.1949), English choral and opera composer who is Chamberlain of York Minster and music faculty of the University of York. The melody is heard in unison and in canon (round).
Richard M. Peek (1927-2005), organist-director of Charlotte’s Covenant Presbyterian Church, created a festive and contemplative piece. It uses the 1906 tune Sine Nomine (Latin “without name”) by the English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams that he composed for “For all the saints,” a poem originally consisting of eleven verses written in 1864 by the Anglican bishop William Walsham How as a processional hymn for All Saints Day.
