Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern Johann Pachelbel
Introit
(Hebrews 1:6) Worship Him, all ye His angels; (Psalm 97:8) Zion heard and was glad. The daughters of Judah rejoiced; because of they judgments, O Lord. (Psalm 97:1) The Lord reigneth, let the earth rejoice: Let the multitude of isles be glad thereof.
Offertory
(Psalm 118:16-17) The right hand of the Lord is exalted: the right hand of the Lord doeth valiantly. I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord.
Meditation Fernand de La Tombelle
Postlude
Allegro in D Major César Franck
On this last Sunday of the Epiphany, we hear a setting of a hymn associated with the season “How bright appears the Morning Star” (Hymn 329). Known as the “Queen of Chorales,” it was written and composed in 1599 by Philipp Nicolai, a German Lutheran pastor. The tune is heard in the pedals on a reed accompanied by two flutes (one in each hand) in the chorale prelude by Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706), organist in Erfurt and Nuremburg, Germany.
The Sermon Hymn (137) is usually associated with Thanksgiving. Verses 2 and 3 reflect on the Gospel for today from Matthew 13.
Antoine Louis Joseph Gueyrand Fernand Fouant de La Tombelle (1854-1928), harmony teacher at the Schola Cantorum and organist of the Church of Saint-Louis d’Antin in Paris, composed his meditation contrasting a flute with strings of the organ.
César-Auguste-Jean-Guillaume-Hubert Franck (1822-1890), born in Liège, Belgium, was organist at St. Clothilde Church and organ professor at the Paris Conservatory. During his last year, he composed organ music for services, of which the postlude is a dramatic example.
