2- Presentation of Christ in the Temple
Presentation of Christ in the Temple February 2, 2025 Presentation of Christ in the Temple (40 Days after Christmas) This Feast Day recalls how forty days after His birth, Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple for the rites of purification and dedication as prescribed by the Torah, and this is also the reason why this day is just as commonly called The Purification of Saint Mary the Virgin. According to the Book of Leviticus (12:1-4), when a woman bore a male child, she was considered “unclean” for seven days, and on the eighth day, her son was to be circumcised. The mother continued to stay at home for 33 days for her blood to be purified. Then, after the 40 days, the mother and the father came to the temple for the rite of purification, which included the offering of a sacrifice — a lamb for a whole-burnt offering and a pigeon or turtledove for a sin offering, or for a poor couple who could not afford a lamb, two pigeons or two turtledoves. Note Joseph and Mary made the offering of the poor (Lk 2:24). Furthermore, Simeon, a just and pious man, who was waiting for the Messiah and looking for the consolation of Israel, was led by the Spirit to come to the temple while Jesus was being presented. He held baby Jesus in his arms and blessed God, saying, “Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; to be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel” (Lk 2:29-32). Simeon, thereby, announced that the Messiah had come for all nations, and then he blessed the Holy Family (Lk 2:34-35). So, the Presentation is of Christ is most clearly a proclamation of Him as the Messiah of Israel and the Light for the Nations. For this reason, at least since the seventh century, candles for the nations and those that will be used throughout the year in the Church have traditionally been blessed at Mass on this day, hence gaining the nickname “Candle-Mass” (Well before this, however, candles had become a common symbol for Christ. As early as St Jerome in the fourth century, the supposed virginity of bees had led many to associate the wax of the candle with the flesh of Jesus Christ born of a Virgin Mother, while the wick of the candle came to symbolize His human soul and flame His divine nature united in One person). Candlemas Day also was important in the lives of farmers. An old English song went as follows: “If Candlemas be fair and bright: * Come, Winter, have another flight. If Candlemas brings clouds and rain: * Go, Winter, and come not again.” So, if the bright sun “overshadows” the brightness of Candlemas Day, there will be more winter. However, if the light of Candlemas Day radiates through the gloom and darkness of the day, the end of winter is near. The Collect.
ALMIGHTY and everliving God, we humbly beseech thy Majesty, that, as thy only-begotten Son was this day presented in the temple in substance of our flesh, so we may be presented unto thee with pure and clean hearts, by the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. For the Epistle. Malachi iii. 1. BEHOLD, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts. But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' sope: and he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness. Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the LORD, as in the days of old, and as in former years. And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts. The Gospel. St. Luke ii. 22. AND when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord; (as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;) and to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtle-doves, or two young pigeons. And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ. And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: for mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; a light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him. And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against; (yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity; and she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem. And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth. And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him. See more details - Said Mass

St. Blaise, Bishop of Sebastea, Martyr (A.D. 316) February 3, 2025 Saint Blase (4th Century) is known for the blessing of throats, among other things. According to pious legend, while bishop of Sebaste in Armenia, Blase (a.k.a. Blasius or Blaise) was martyred under the Roman Emperor Licinius in the early 4th century. He was possibly the son of wealthy Christian nobility. Before his martyrdom he lived in a cave and blessed sick and wounded animals, including cattle. Legend has it that a mother brought her son who was dying from choking on a fish or chicken bone, and Blase healed him. His intercessions are therefore sought by the sick, especially those with throat problems. He died a terrible death, having his flesh torn with wool-combs, and is therefore also the patron saint of woolcombers. As we are comforted by God in the midst of the perils of this life, may we also comfort others who suffer. COLLECT. O God, who makest us glad with the yearly festival of blessed Blase thy Martyr and Bishop: mercifully grant that, as we now observe his heavenly birthday; so we may likewise rejoice in his protection. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

9- St. Cyril of Alexandria
St. Cyril of Alexandria February 9, 2025 As one of the Doctors of the Church, Saint Cyril (d. 444) is known for countering the heresy by Nestorius, which claimed that the Incarnate Christ was not fully and simultaneously God and man. At the Council of Ephesus in 431, Cyril asserted that there could be no atoning of sin if Christ was not man, and that Our Lord must also be God, in order to redeem that which he had become. By his emphasis of the Virgin Mary as the Mother of God, Cyril was able to preserve Christ's divinity and humanity during his particularly heretical day. INTROIT. Sacerdotes tui. Ps 132. LET thy priests be clothed with righteousness, and let thy Saints sing with joyfulness: for thy servant David's sake, turn not away the presence of thine Anointed (alleluia, alleluia). Ps. ibid. Lord, remember David: and all his trouble. V. Glory be. COLLECT. O GOD, who didst strengthen thy blessed Confessor and Bishop Saint Cyril, invincibly to maintain the divine motherhood of the blessed Virgin Mary: vouchsafe that at his intercession we, believing her to be indeed the Mother of God; may as her children rejoice in her protection. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. EPSTLE. Ecclesiasticus 39:5-10 5. The righteous will give his heart to resort early to the LORD that made him, and will pray before the Most High, and will open his mouth in prayer, and make supplication for his sins. 6 When the great Lord will, he shall be filled with the spirit of understanding: he shall pour out wise sentences, and give thanks unto the Lord in his prayer. 7 He shall direct his counsel and knowledge, and in his secrets shall he meditate. 8 He shall shew forth that which he hath learned, and shall glory in the law of the covenant of the Lord. 9 Many shall commend his understanding; and so long as the world endureth, it shall not be blotted out: his memorial shall not depart away, and his Name shall live from generation to generation. 10 Nations shall shew forth his wisdom, and the congregation shall declare his praise.
TRACT. Ps. 112. Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord: he hath great delight in his commandments. V. His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the faithful shall be blessed. V. Riches and plenteousness shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever. GOPEL. St Matthew 5:13-20 13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. 14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. 17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. 19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. SECRET. ALMIGHTY GOD, look down in mercy upon these our offerings: and grant that we may be found worthy to receive within our hearts thine only-begotten Son, co-eternal with thee in thy glory, even Jesus Christ our Lord. Who liveth and reigneth with Thee. COMMUNION. St. Matthew 24. Blessed is that servant whom his lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall make him ruler over all his goods (alleluia). POSTCOMMUNION. O LORD, who hast refreshed us with these heavenly mysteries: we humbly beseech thee; that by the merits and example of blessed Cyril thy Bishop, we may be enabled worthily to serve the mot holy Mother of thine only begotten Son. Who liveth and reigneth with thee. See more details - Said Mass

• • • • • | 24- St. Matthias, Apostle
St. Matthias, Apostle February 24, 2025 Matthias filled the place of the twelfth apostle, following the suicide of the traitor Judas (Acts 1:15-25). The conditions necessary for becoming one of the twelve apostles (related in the day's epistle reading from Acts of the Apostles) was to have been a disciple of Our Lord from the time of His Baptism to His Ascension. Consequently, the person must have been a witness to the Resurrected Christ. The eleven apostles prayed to God to have it known whether Joseph Barsabas or Matthias should be chosen. After drawing lots, Matthias was chosen, and was numbered with the eleven Apostles. Collect: O ALMIGHTY GOD, who into the place of the traitor Judas didst choose thy faithful servant Matthias to be of the number of the twelve Apostles; Grant that thy Church, being always preserved from false Apostles, may be ordered and guided by faithful and true pastors; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
