Prelude on “Thaxted”                          Gustav Holst, arr. Thiman

Idyll                                                                       David Paxton

Allegretto from Concerto in E         Antonio Vivaldi, arr. Wolff

Gustav Holst (1874-1934), English composer of orchestral and choral

music, wrote a orchestral suite “The Planets” from 1914-16. The tune

“Thaxted” (named for the town where he lived) is taken from the second theme in the movement “Jupiter” from this suite. The tune has had both secular and sacred words set to it.

David Paxton is one of several pseudonyms for Lani Smith (1934-2015), American composer of organ and choral music. His idyll (a peaceful or picturesque scene) contrasts two melodies, one restful and one restless.

Antonio Vivaldi (1648-1741) was a priest who was in charge of music for a female orphanage in Venice, Italy. Many of his instrumental (over 500) and choral pieces were composed for these young women to play. His allegretto is extracted from the first movement of the “Spring” Concerto from his “Four Seasons.”

The Processional Hymn (274) was written in 1886 for the bicentennial of the city of Albany, New York.  The poet was William Croswell Doane, the Protestant Episcopal Bishop of Albany. Its verses express our praise and thanks to the Holy Trinity, collectively and individually. The tune Albany was composed for this poem in 1886 by John Albert Jeffery, organist at the cathedral in Albany.
